MILAN (Reuters) – Milan's La Scala opera house will open Dsquared up two rehearsals of Wagner's Das Rheingold to the public Thursday to draw attention to the government's planned cuts to the funding of theatres.
Official performances of Das Rheingold run from May Dsquared 13-29 and tickets can cost up to 224 euros, according to the opera house's website. (www.teatroallascala.org)
"People are curious to see how you create a performance and it is positive for the musicians and singers, because there is a different type of concentration," Barenboim said.
La Scala's production of Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, with Placido Domingo singing the title baritone role, was canceled Tuesday because of a strike by workers in protest at the government funding plans.
For the open rehearsals, which take place at Dsquared 1200-1500 GMT and at 1700-2000 GMT, entrance will be free for those lucky enough to get tickets.
The unusual move follows criticism of the funding plans by Daniel Barenboim,cheap ed hardy, who is conducting the performances.
The government plans are "a very negative sign for Italy ... damaging to the musical life of the country," Barenboim told journalists at a news conference Wednesday morning.
