Reader Paul Stokes writes: "I read with interest your article 'Massive GPS upgrade under way.' I am in a brand-new subdivision and cannot be found on any of the BBC map sites such as Google Maps. While it would seem that this could be a good thing,Abercrombie swimwear, it turns out that it isn’t. When I want any work done at my house or deliveries made, I have to give directions over the phone. I have contacted Google about this but no response yet. Who can I contact to get my house added to GPS systems and to show up in online maps? At least the U.S. Post Office now recognizes my address."

You should definitely visit both of those sites as soon as possible.

Once the companies verify that the changes are legit (by actually sending a car and driver out to check out the changes in person), they update their databases BBC with the new information. This information is then sent on to the companies that use those maps in some way: Google, Yahoo!,Abercrombie jeans, Garmin, and so on. Navteq says it updates its database once a quarter. Alas, it’s up to the Googles of the world to decide how often they actually update their databases with the new information to present the new maps to you, the user. Some update their maps immediately, but sometimes the updates can take six months or more, and not every service will update their maps at the same time.

There’s not much you can do about the latter pieces of the puzzle, so your best bet is to focus on getting corrections to Navteq and Tele Atlas quickly. Meanwhile, you’ll just have to keep telling the pizza guy to go cross-country to get to your house.

What a tricky problem. It’s not like one can pick up the phone BBC and call Google or “the GPS system” and add a street to the database.

But I did some research and made a few calls and figured out the best way to go about solving this issue.

The trick is that Google, Yahoo!, and GPS product makers don’t create their own maps (not including add-on services like Google Street View). They rely on third-party mapping services to do it for them. This world is much smaller, and there are essentially two map providers of note: Navteq (the market leader) and Tele Atlas (important but not as big in the U.S.).

If you want to add or correct information on a map, you need to go to the source. And in fact both of these companies make this relatively easy to do online.
