Wi-Fi available on a third of planes - Affliction

According to Computerworld, a third of all U.S. passenger planes are now equipped with Wi-Fi, with 968 out of 2,800 aircraft in the country featuring Gogo Internet service onboard (plus another six Southwest Airlines planes that use Wi-Fi service from an outfit called Row 44).

And those numbers are increasing across the board. Southwest says it will outfit its entire fleet of 540 planes by 2012 (it hit a snag on getting government approval for antennas), and laggards like United (with just 13 Wi-Fi-equipped planes) are trying to catch up to airlines like Delta and American, which together account for over 650 planes that feature Internet service. Within the next two years, Computerworld adds, the industry should essentially be saturated with airborne Wi-Fi.

The next item of concern is likely to be price, Computerworld says: Gogo costs up to $13 for more than three hours of service. That may seem reasonable to business users, but those without expense accounts tend to look at the fee as a bit much: In an era when Starbucks and McDonald’s are giving away Wi-Fi, any payment may soon seem too high.

For my money, however,Affliction, I’m happy to pay the $13 for Wi-Fi whether I’m traveling for business or not. The time saved in answering hours’ worth of emails in my hotel room after I land — and the ability to either get a little writing done or perhaps play a video game or two so as not to have to watch “The Bounty Hunter” again — is worth far more than that modest fee.

And,Citizens of Humanity, after all, at 30,000 feet you can’t just run out to Starbucks.

No longer a rare luxury that makes you realize the next four hours can actually be productive and entertaining, Wi-Fi is finally coming into its own in the domestic air fleet.
