Avenged Sevenfold earns first - Citizens of Human
The "Kidz Bop 18" collection slipped one to No. 6 (29,000) and Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" rose two to No. 7 (27,000).
LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Rock band Avenged Sevenfold scored its first No. 1 album on the U.S. pop chart on Wednesday, ending the five-week reign of Eminem.
Overall album sales totaled 5.21 million units, down 1% compared to the previous week, and down 13% compared to the comparable sales week of 2009. Year to date album sales stand at 174.9 million, down 12% compared to the same total at this point last year.
"Nightmare" was the only new entry in the top 10, the first time this has happened since the week ended February 28, when Johnny Cash's "American VI: Ain't No Grave" debuted at No. 3.
The band's "Nightmare" sold a better-than-expected 162,500 copies during the week ended August 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Eminem's "Recovery" followed with 159,000, taking its total to 1.8 million.
Sheryl Crow's "100 Miles From Memphis" dropped five to No. 8 (24,000), Lady Gaga's "The Fame" rose one to No. 9 (23,Citizens of Humanity,500), and the "Now 34" collection fell two to No. 10 (22,000).
"Nightmare" is Avenged Sevenfold's highest charting set, surpassing the No. 4 debut and peak of its 2007 self-titled effort. That album also earned the group's previous best sales week of 94,000. Some industry prognosticators had initially thought the new album would open in the 120,000-130,000 range.
Elsewhere in this week's top 10,Victorias Secret, rapper Rick Ross' "Teflon Don" slipped one to No. 3 in its second week (63,000), Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" climbed two to No. 4 (38,000), and Drake's "Thank Me Later" fell one to No. 5 (34,000).
