US lawmakers urge probe of China - Christian Audig
Fifty US lawmakers earlier this month sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner calling for a probe into the plans of Ansteel, also known as Anshan Iron and Steel Group.
Chinese government officials have repeatedly called on the United States to treat its companies "fairly" and not "politicise" the deal.
"The American steel industry and the steelworkers we represent are desperately struggling in this economy to compete on a fair playing ground with China,Christian Audigier, which is why we find it necessary to take action in the fight against unfair Chinese trading practices," the letter said.
BEIJING (AFP) – A group of US legislators has urged President Barack Obama to investigate a plan by a top Chinese steelmaker to invest in an American firm, saying Washington failed to heed an earlier call.
Sino-US relations have been strained this year over a range of economic and trade issues,Miss Sixty, including the value of the Chinese currency and Google's spat with Beijing over censorship.
However, the response from Geithner was "inadequate" and "disappointing", the Congressional Steel Caucus said in a statement Thursday.
In a letter to Obama dated Thursday, the Steel Caucus said their main concerns with the investment were its impact on US jobs and national security.
State-run Ansteel, one of China's largest steel mills, signed an agreement with Mississippi-based Steel Development Company in May that includes construction of five plants in the United States.
"We urge you to join this fight and investigate this investment."
AFP calls to Ansteel went unanswered.
