UPDATE: Subsequent updates from Twitter said that some timelines were updating slowly. To help stabilize, administrators turned off several features, including Twitter Search, hovercards, web sidebar data (trends, friends counts, etc), and profile image uploads.
Twitter has been experiencing a number of "fail whales" since Tuesday, a service-outage problem the micro-blogging site attributed to a "system-side issue."
